A woman in Kentucky was arrested this week after police discovered a body in her mother’s backyard and additional human remains cooking inside her oven.
A worker at a property in Mount Olivet, roughly 50 miles southeast of Cincinnati, contacted authorities on Wednesday after discovering a body in the backyard, according to Kentucky State Police.
Officers arriving at the scene found the dismembered remains in the grass, alongside a bloody mattress and blood stains on the back porch and the threshold of the back door, as detailed in the arrest citation.
Police secured a search warrant for the home and brought in a special response team after 32-year-old Torilena May Fields, who was inside the house, refused to come out, according to state police. Authorities used gas and communicated with Fields via a robot, leading to her eventual surrender later that night without further incident. Fields had blood on her face, hands and clothing, according to the arrest citation.
Fields has been charged with abusing a corpse, tampering with evidenc, and obstructing government operations with additional charges possible, according to a state police news release. As of Friday, it was unclear whether she had legal representation, as court records do not yet list an attorney for her. Fields is scheduled to be arraigned next week.
During their search of the home, officers discovered a steel pot in the oven containing human remains, and according to the arrest citation, the pot “was still warm to the touch.”
The man who reported the incident told police he saw Torilena Fields and her mother, Trudy Fields, the homeowner, during a visit to the house on Tuesday evening. He noted that no one else was present. Before leaving, he said Torilena Fields had become “confrontational” and was “casting spells on them,” according to the arrest citation, which also indicated she may have been under the influence of drugs.
When the man discovered the body, he initially believed it to be that of Trudy Fields, noting he found a “pile of her hair,” according to the arrest citation. Police later confirmed in the citation that the victim was indeed Torilena Fields’ mother.
While speaking with Fox 56 News, Kentucky State Police Trooper David Jones said, “this is going to be a long night for our guys.”
Jones further spoke about police being in the early stages of the investigation, WDRB news reported, saying “We have a death investigation at this time right now. We’re in the infant stages of that investigation.”
